Back to it

without comments

Day five ended up being a fairly low key affair for me. I was happy to get a few good runs in and finish the trip uninjured before lunch. A final soak in the tub followed by lunch in Dusty’s and it was only a couple of hours before we were using up our last loose change in the Longhorn bar. We ate beef stroganoff and finished up the night with a game of poker. Our plans for night-time sledging down to the bar will have to wait until next year.

Dave and I got back to Seattle for lunch (no problems at the border!) and like that, brother was passing through security to board his flight back to London.

Tuesday was a crazy hectic day at work but that was to be expected.

Whistler, days three and four

without comments

Breakfast was somehow forgotten yesterday amidst the excitment of the journey up to the Blackcomb Glacier. The run from the top to the foot of the Excelerator lift is about 7km, with three of those on a cat track curling back around the mountain. We made good time up there (T-bar ride and all) and although there was a lot more snow than last year, it was decidedly icier. But still a great ride. Several runs later and we were all ready to take down lunch. I ate well.
Dave and I peeled away in the afternoon given the day three aches were starting to set in. We met up with Sean and Eric again at the bottom of the mountain and rode the never-ending gondola back up to the top of Whistler. A very leisurely ride back down ended the day nicely. Somehow my mid afternoon nap turned into a whole nights sleep and I missed the late night expedition to Dusty’s bar in Creekside.
Well rested andfaring a little better than the rest of the party, breakfast time was upon us. A big eat in Dusty’s was the perfect start to day four. I went solo for the morning and although the weekend had brought more people to the mountain, the conditions were much the same and I had a few good rides on Whistler and a quick stop in the village. We all met up for lunch at the top of Blackcomb and then played around in 7th Heaven for a few great runs before heading back to the base. The last ride out via the Dave Murray run seemed like the best we’ve had; the snow had seemingly melted a fair amount of the top snow and the machines too had done their part. By chance, we all came in together and that brings us to now. I believe an outing to the village is on the horizon.
I posted some more pictures and a couple of videos in the same place,Snowboarding at Whistler (Feb 2006), including one ofDave getting some air.

Whistler, day two report

without comments

Lots of good boarding yesterday. We spent all day on Whistler, riding the Dave Murray run and coming over the Saddle in some crazy 60 kph winds giving a temperature of -50C at the peak. After a truly difficult moguled run down, we took an early lunch at Dusty’s in Creekside followed by a quick trip up to the top to recover birthday-boy Adam and rode back out to the base for a huge plate of nachos.
A few more runs and we were ready to exercise the ski-in feature of the condo which worked as promised. A few drinks in the hot-tub, a fantastic nap and a we were ready to make for the village. Fine dinner at 21 Steps followed by drinks at Wild Bill’s; all good.
As things are a little shaky this morning, Dave and I are about to head out to Creekside for some big breakfast before tackling Blackcomb today.

Whistler, day two begins

Plenty of sleep last night, disturbed only by soothing lullaby of thebeeping house alarm. It’s wicked cold this morning but the lifts are starting to run and we have riding to do.

New blog location

I’m going to start using MSN spaces for blogging exclusively because it has great support for post-by-email and mobile devices. I’ll swtich the main feed on andyoakley.com and put some redirects in place for the feeds. Still got to figure out what to do with the old posts, but that’ll follow.

Whistler, day one

without comments

Despite our best efforts, a seven am start was the best we could muster after a late-evening outing to Fado. We made decent time, breakfast at McDonalds, five minutes at the border and an easy drive up to Whistler.

Rentals and passes were all easy and we were on the mountain before one pm. Snow is so-so, no powder, but it’s not icy or bullet proof and quite enjoyable. It’s wickedly cold too. Dave and I got plenty of runs into today and found the skills came back quickly enough.

Our accommodation is decidedly palace-like with plenty of space, lots of bedrooms, a nice big gathering room and a tiny hot tub which still managed to hold the six of us. Very pleased there.

Great home-made spaghetti for dinner and now the fresh air is starting to go to my head. It will be a quiet night.

Brother arrives!

It’s been a crazy busy few weeks for me between Hawaii, another VSLive! keynote and now with Dave in town. He arrived Saturday afternoon and undeterred by jetlag, he ate Jamie Oliver-style burgers and even managed a few drinks out at Marcus’ Martini Heaven after a ten hour flight.

Sunday morning we caught a 9:30 ferry over to Bainbridge Island for some breakfast at the Steamliner Diner. Good as always and a really leisurely, pedestrian way to start the day. At an unprecedented-for-Seattle 60 degrees (F) the afternoon was not to be wasted and the top of the Space Needle gave clear views of Rainier and another latte at Starbucks. Dave, Katie and I had a great meal at the Icon Grill in the evening and called it an early night.

After work on Monday, there was more good food at Benihana and we enjoyed it all. I got up before seven this morning to move Katie’s car (unfortunately she seems to have been struck down by the flu) and I did not expect to see the snow falling but it only lasted until about nine. By then, we were in IHOP enjoying breakfast and pancakes. We have been eating well.

We’re off to Whistler early tomorrow morning for five days of boarding. We even have ski-in ski-out accommodation! I can’t wait.

First mobile post

..Text has been a great blogging engine for a few years now but its relative stagnation (as work transferred to Community Server) has left me looking for more. Meanwhile MSN Spaces has come a really long way since its Japanese pilot and is really starting to look good.

Combine that with my new Treo 700 which makes writing mails on the move really easy (like this one) and it’s a recipe for success.
